'Why Did You Paint Your Face Brown?': Two Girls Grill Justin Trudeau About Blackface Photos in Awkward Interview

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has again apologised for dressing up in blackface after being grilled by twin girls during an awkward interview.

The Liberal Party prime minister told the two girls he was sorry for hurting people and knew donning blackface was wrong in an appearance on the comedic Facebook Watch show New Mom, Who Dis? hosted by Jessi Cruickshank.

In a teaser clip of the interview, which airs in full at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Trudeau also admitted he "didn't know" wearing blackface was wrong when he did it.

The first picture of the Canadian prime minister sporting blackface was published by Time magazine on September 19 and was later followed by another photo of the then-teacher in blackface at a school talent show.

A video of the prime minister in racist makeup was also published by Global News in September. Trudeau apologized for wearing racist makeup after the first picture was published.

He later told media that he didn't know how many times he had appeared in blackface but was asked whether he could "round to the nearest five" at a September campaign event.

During Trudeau's interview on New Mom, Who Dis?, Cruickshank gave a group of children guest starring on the show a chance to ask Trudeau questions.

Two twin girls stood up and asked him: "Why did you paint your face brown?"

A visibly uncomfortable Canadian prime minister said: "It's something I shouldn't have done because it hurt people. It's not something that you should do and that is something that I learned.

"I didn't know it back then, and I know it now, and I'm sorry I hurt people."

When the girls asked whether he painted his nose and his hands brown, Trudeau said: "Yeah, and it was the wrong thing to do. And I had a good conversation with my kids around taking responsibility for mistakes and making sure that we're always sticking up for each other, and not teasing each other, and being respectful towards each other."

Trudeau also apologised to the two girls and children who faced "teasing and discrimination because of the colour of their skin."

"That's just not right in this country or anywhere around the world and we all have to work together to make sure that it doesn't happen."

The Canadian prime minister's grilling on New Mom, Who Dis? is not the first time he has come under scrutiny this week for his history of wearing racist makeup.

Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer dubbed Trudeau a "phony" and a "fraud" unfit to run Canada in a Monday election debate, and specifically brought up the fact that the prime minister did not know how often he had worn blackface.

A CBC News poll tracker for the Canadian federal elections set to take place on October 21 has Trudeau's Liberal Party in the lead with a polling average of 34.3 percent with the Conservative Party less than a point behind on 33.9 percent.
